This document provides data on the response rates of different population groups responding to the 2025 National Under 16 Cancer Patient Experience Survey (U16 CPES), which will help us to understand how well the responses collected reflect the make-up of the eligible population and which groups are less likely to respond.
Response rates are calculated by comparing the total number of patients invited to take part in the survey with the total number of patients who responded. Data from previous years has been included, where demographics are comparable.
Patients and their parents/carers were eligible for U16 CPES if they:
The total number of eligible patients is known as the sample size in this document.
The demographics used to split response rates are:
Age is derived from the date of birth provided by the trust.
Gender is taken directly from the data provided by the trusts. This data may not match directly to self-reported results in the survey results.
Index of multiple deprivation (IMD) is a location based measure of deprivation which gives a score to every Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) in England then these can be split into 5 equal groups called quintiles in order to group patients into similar levels of deprivation. The respondent’s postcode of residence is then used to map them to an IMD quintile which can then be used for reporting.
Ethnicity is taken directly from the data provided by the trusts. This data may not match directly to the self-reported ethnicity in the survey results.
Diagnostic group is derived by the patient ICD10 code provided to us by the trust and this is then mapped to a set of clinical groups that are used for reporting.
Suppression has been applied to results where the total count for a particular demographic group is 5 patients or less. In the case of suppression, values will be missing from graphs and tables.
In cases where there were no results for a particular demographic group the total and percentage will be 0.
For 2025, the total sample size was 3,522. This compares with 3,434 the previous year.
The graphs and tables below show the overall response rates and the response rates split by various demographics.
TIP: Hover over the graph bars to see the base size of the group. The larger the base size, the greater number of people in that demographic makes up the total sample.
For 2025, the total number of respondents was 751 and the total sample size was 3,522. This compares with 759 and 3,434 the previous year.
The graphs below show the makeup of the total sample and the total respondents when split by certain demographic breakdowns. To have a representative set of respondents the proportions of the demographic splits should be as close as possible to the total sample proportions i.e. both graphs would look the same.
If a group is much larger in the respondents graph, compared to the sample graph, this means that more people from this group answered the survey and may be over-represented in the results. When a group is much smaller in the respondents graph, this means less people from this group answered the survey and so may be under-represented in the results.
The table below contains the sample and respondent distributions used in the charts above. Use the Excel or CSV buttons to export the data.
